A few months ago, my friend started a business venture with Pike Street Market out of Seattle to deliver fresh produce to the workplace. It is a Consumer Supported agriculture (CSA) program where you pay farmers up-front to get produce for the summer. It is all grown locally, 100% pesticide free, and 90% organic. And with a minimum of 15 people, they will deliver the baskets directly to your work each week. You cand sign up for a flower arrangement too.
I contacted the Wellness Coordinator at Providence Everett to see if it was something that we could implement. And after a lot of due diligence and approvals, we began promoting the program internally. I think we have over 30 people signed up. Today was our first delivery. It even made the local paper! Here is a picture of my flowers and my basket. The basket had red chard, radishes, mint, oregano, rhubarb, strawberries, salad mix, onions, asparagus (yes Anne, asparagus)... and it came with a newsletter with recipes and bios of local farmers contributing to the basket. It sure will make it easy to keep fresh fruits and veggies in the fridge. And it sure feels good to eat local and support the community. Just remember -- one person can make a difference.

This post reminded me - I thought of you and Tracy on my honeymoon when we visited the San Francisco Ferry Building. It used to be a sort of terminal for ferry passengers but has since been converted into a huge indoor "farmers market" of sorts. It houses dozens of organic food vendors, you can buy everything from organic fruits and veggies to meat, dairy, mushrooms, and wine. I'll have to email you photos.
That's awesome! They should have quoted the person on the wellness committee who brought it to their attention! I'm happy you purchased asparagus - after all, it is the bestest veggie around!
