When the world stops turning

As if it happened five minutes ago, I can still remember where I was and what I was doing when my mom called me a week or two ago to tell me she had cancer. My world stopped turning. In less than a week later, I found myself on a plane to go home to be there for her surgery. And with a lot of prayer and optimism, she is now cancer-free... as far as we know. They were able to remove the tumor, and although it was large, it appears to have been confined to the colon.

She didn't want to say anything to anyone at first; which I guess is normal. But lots of people were secretly praying for her. And her prognosis is favorable. Her surgery was pretty extensive, and her next battle will be the chemotherapy. She should return to a normal life after that. She has been blessed with a second chance.

This experience, although terribly difficult, has taught me more about faith and how prayer can not only lead to miracles, but can provide support and comfort during difficult times. It is amazing how the Lord uses circumstances to strengthen us.

I spent over a week with my my mom, dad, and two sisters... and an occasional visit from my nieces and brother-in-law. It was great time to talk, laugh, remember, share. We didn't do much of anything except "family." It felt good.

I am still not finished processing the reality of this whole experience. It still remains to be my current reality. And I am okay with that. I have so much more to learn from this experience. I just hope that--when all is said and done--that we can see God's hand in our lives and give him the glory, regardless of the outcome.

"The Lord gave me what I had, and the Lord has taken it away. Praise the name of the Lord!”
